The National Testing Agency (NTA) will soon release the JEE Main 2025 results on its official website –https://jeemain.nta.nic.in/. The provisional answer key for Session 2 has already been published, and candidates are now eagerly waiting for their final scores and ranks. Every year, lakhs of students appear for the JEE Main exam, and sometimes, two or more students end up getting the same total NTA score. To handle such situations, NTA follows a detailed tie-breaking policy to decide who gets a higher rank.

How Does NTA Resolve Ties in JEE Main 2025?

NTA has different tie-breaking rules depending on the paper a student has appeared for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), Paper 2A (B.Arch), and Paper 2B (B.Planning). If two or more students get the same NTA score, the agency will follow a step-by-step method to decide their ranking. Let’s look at the process for each paper in detail.

Tie-Breaking Rules for JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)

If students score the same total marks in Paper 1, their ranks will be decided in the following order:

  1. The student with a higher score in Mathematics will get a better rank.

  2. If the scores in Maths are also the same, then the Physics score will be compared.

  3. If the tie still continues, the Chemistry score will be checked.

  4. If all three subject scores are the same, then NTA will look at the proportion of correct to incorrect answers across all subjects - the student with fewer wrong answers will be ranked higher.

  5. If the tie still remains, the student with fewer incorrect answers in Mathematics will be preferred.

  6. Next, fewer incorrect answers in Physics will be considered.

  7. Finally, fewer incorrect answers in Chemistry will be checked.

  8. If the tie still cannot be broken after all these steps, both students will be given the same rank.

Tie-Breaking Rules for JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch)

For students who appeared for the B.Arch paper, the following order is used to break ties:

  1. First, the Mathematics score will be compared.

  2. Then, the Aptitude Test score will be considered.

  3. If still tied, the Drawing Test score will be checked.

  4. If all subject scores are the same, NTA will compare the number of correct and incorrect answers across all parts of the test.

  5. Then, fewer wrong answers in Mathematics will be considered.

  6. After that, NTA will look at fewer incorrect answers in the Aptitude Test.

  7. If the tie still cannot be resolved after these steps, students will be awarded the same rank.

Tie-Breaking Rules for JEE Main Paper 2B (B.Planning)

For the B.Planning paper, the tie-breaking rules are slightly different but follow the same logic. Here’s the order:

  1. First, the Mathematics score is compared.

  2. Next, the Aptitude Test score is looked at.

  3. Then, the Planning-Based Questions score is checked.

  4. If scores are still the same, NTA compares the overall accuracy the student with fewer wrong answers in all subjects is ranked higher.

  5. Then, the number of incorrect answers in Mathematics is compared.

  6. After that, fewer wrong answers in the Aptitude Test are considered.

  7. Finally, fewer wrong answers in Planning-Based Questions are checked.

  8. If none of these steps break the tie, the students will share the same rank.

NTA’s tie-breaking policy ensures a fair and transparent ranking system for all students. It gives importance to subject-wise performance and accuracy in answering questions. Candidates are advised to keep checking the official website jeemain.nta.nic.in for the latest updates on the JEE Main 2025 results, cut-offs, and rank list. The final results are expected soon, and students should be ready with their application number and date of birth to check their scores as soon as the results are declared.
