Kerala since ever has given, coconut, banana and jackfruit, a special treatment. And in a new bid, Kerala has declared “Jackfruit” as the official fruit of Kerala. The Jack fruit also is known as the Jack tree, fenne, Jack fruit or some other simply as Jack and Jak is a species of tree in the fig, mulberry and breadfruit family native to southwest India. In the state assembly, the agriculture minister V.S. Sunil Kumar announced the news. Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit that is known for its distinctive taste and aroma the pride of place.
The aim is to promote the "Kerala Jack Fruit" as a brand market across the country and abroad, showcasing its organic worth and nutrients. This is to increase the value addition of the product to give a boost to fruit production and sale. According to the available statics, every year 320 million Jack fruits are produced and 30% Jack fruit is wasted.
Kumar said A total revenue of Rs 15,000 crore is expected through the sale of jack fruit and its related products through branding of the fruit. The 'Kerala jackfruit' is more organic and tasty as it is produced in a very natural way without using any chemical fertilizers or pesticides, The Agriculture Minister of state said.
The government also conducts 'Jackfruit' fest every year which makes it more popular in the public and the state.
