Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare has released its latest data on Kharif crop sowing, revealing that the total area covered under Kharif crops has exceeded 1092 lakh hectares as of Monday, September 09, 2024. The report highlights year-on-year growth in the sowing area for key crops like paddy, pulses, coarse cereals, and oilseeds, indicating a strong agricultural performance during the Kharif season.
As per the data, the sowing of paddy, a major staple crop, has seen a notable increase. This year, 409.50 lakh hectares have been reported under paddy cultivation, compared to 393.57 lakh hectares during the same period last year. This growth is likely attributed to favorable weather conditions and the government's support measures for farmers.
Pulses, a crucial source of protein in the Indian diet, have also witnessed a significant rise in area coverage. The data shows that 126.20 lakh hectares have been sown under pulses this year, compared to 117.39 lakh hectares during the corresponding period of last year. This increase in pulses acreage reflects the growing demand and efforts to boost pulse production.
The area under coarse cereals, another important crop category, has expanded to 188.72 lakh hectares, up from 181.74 lakh hectares last year. Coarse cereals, known for their resilience in arid and semi-arid regions, have seen a steady increase in cultivation, indicating farmers' adaptability to diverse agro-climatic conditions.
Similarly, oilseeds, which play a key role in meeting India's edible oil demands, have recorded a rise in sowing. The data shows 192.40 lakh hectares of oilseeds have been planted this year, compared to 189.44 lakh hectares during the same period last year. This increase is a positive sign for the nation's oilseed production and self-reliance goals.
Lastly, the area under sugarcane cultivation has also seen a slight increase, with 57.68 lakh hectares reported this year, compared to 57.11 lakh hectares last year.
The data underscores a positive trend in Kharif crop sowing, driven by favorable factors and government support.
