In an effort to ensure the safety and well-being of farmers in Manipur, the state government has announced that it will provide security to those engaged in agricultural work. The decision comes as a response to the ongoing ethnic strife that has posed significant challenges to farmers and their livelihoods.
Inspector General of Police, I K Muivah, addressed the media during a press conference held at the Police Headquarters in Imphal. He emphasized the importance of security for farmers, especially during the planting period of the agriculture season, which is relatively short.
To implement this security measure effectively, the state government has made adjustments in the deployment of security personnel. The number of security personnel assigned to VIP duty has been reduced, and these personnel will now be utilized to provide security to farmers involved in agricultural activities.
In order to avail of the security cover, farmers are advised to contact the Superintendent of Police in their respective districts before proceeding with their work. The Inspector General of Police stressed that no farmers should engage in farming without proper security arrangements.
The deployment of security personnel has been strategically planned, with different districts receiving varying numbers based on the prevailing circumstances. A total of 822 security personnel will be deployed in Imphal West district, 290 in Imphal East, 236 in Bishnupur, 147 in Thoubal, 204 in Kakching, 200 in Kangpokpi, and 300 in Churachandpur district.
Furthermore, in recent developments, state police and central forces have carried out extensive search operations in vulnerable and fringe areas of Churachandpur district, Bishnupur, and Kangpokpi district. These operations are aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the local communities and maintaining law and order in the region.
This proactive measure is expected to boost the confidence of farmers and enable them to continue their vital contributions to the agricultural sector despite the challenging circumstances.
