The Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2023 report, unveiled by Union Minister Parshottam Rupala, highlights significant changes in India's livestock sector.
The report, based on the Animal Integrated Sample Survey conducted between March 2022 and February 2023, reveals noteworthy trends in the production of milk, eggs, meat, and wool.
In the 2022-23 period, India's milk production surged by 3.8% compared to the previous year, reaching 230.58 million tonnes. Uttar Pradesh led the states with a 15.7% contribution, followed by Rajasthan (14.44%), Madhya Pradesh (8.73%), Gujarat (7.49%), and Andhra Pradesh (6.70%). Karnataka exhibited the highest annual growth rate at 8.76%, trailed by West Bengal (8.65%) and Uttar Pradesh (6.99%). This growth continues a positive course from the preceding years, with increases of 6.4% in 2018-19, 5.6% in 2019-20, 5.8% in 2020-21, and 5.7% in 2021-22.
Egg production experienced a 6.7% YoY increase, totalling 138.38 billion, with Andhra Pradesh dominating at 20.1%, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.58%), Telangana (12.77%), West Bengal (9.94%), and Karnataka (6.51%). West Bengal, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh demonstrated the highest annual growth rates at 20.1%, 18.93%, and 12.80%, respectively.
Meat production also witnessed growth, rising by 5% to reach 9.77 million tonnes in 2022-23. Uttar Pradesh contributed 12.2% to the national output, followed by West Bengal (11.9%), Maharashtra (11.5%), Andhra Pradesh (11.2%), and Telangana (11%). Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Goa exhibited the highest annual growth rates at 63%, 38.34%, and 22.98%, respectively.
Contrastingly, the wool sector faced challenges, registering a negative growth of 16.8% over the past five years. However, there was a slight improvement of 2.1% from the previous year, resulting in a total production of 33.61 million kg in 2022-23.
These findings, released at a National Milk Day event in Guwahati, underscore the dynamic nature of India's animal husbandry landscape, with robust growth in milk, egg, and meat production, while wool production faces a downturn but shows signs of stabilization.
