National Institute of Siddha Sets Guinness Record with 567 Varmam Therapies in One Session

Varmam therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment from the Siddha system of medicine, renowned for its effectiveness in addressing musculoskeletal pain, neurological disorders, and chronic ailments like stroke and arthritis.

National Institute of Siddha (NIS) has achieved a historic milestone by setting a Guinness World Record for conducting Varmam therapy for 567 individuals simultaneously. Held at the NIS campus in Tambaram, Chennai, this event highlights the growing global recognition of Siddha medicine, particularly its drug-free and non-invasive therapeutic methods. The achievement was praised by Union Minister of Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, who lauded NIS’s efforts in a congratulatory message.

The record-breaking event showcased 567 trained Varmanis (Varmam healers) providing therapy to an equal number of participants. This mass demonstration underscored the effectiveness and therapeutic potential of Siddha medicine, reflecting its relevance in addressing modern health challenges.

Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, commended the achievement, emphasizing that such events are instrumental in raising awareness about the scientific and cultural value of traditional practices among younger generations. He expressed confidence in the growing global and domestic interest in Siddha medicine, affirming the ministry’s commitment to furthering its reach.

NIS Director Prof. Dr. R. Meenakumari highlighted the significance of the record, describing Varmam therapy as a unique, cost-effective, and non-pharmacological treatment option. She emphasized its application in addressing complex neurological, orthopedic, and musculoskeletal conditions, as well as autism spectrum disorders and cerebral palsy in children. Dr. Meenakumari expressed optimism that this global recognition would draw more attention to the Siddha system of medicine.

Varmam therapy, a vital component of Siddha medicine, is celebrated for its ability to provide rapid relief for musculoskeletal pain, injuries, and neurological disorders.

Rooted in the ancient martial art of Varmakalai, it has evolved into a scientifically grounded therapeutic practice for treating chronic and acute ailments such as stroke, arthritis, and trauma-related injuries.
