According to Subsection (2) of Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act of 1961, it is mandatory for anyone who has been assigned a PAN as of July 1, 2017, to provide his Aadhaar Number so that the Aadhaar and PAN can be linked.
Following several extensions, the government announced June 30, 2023, as the final date for linking PAN with Aadhaar.
The PAN of taxpayers who have failed to notify their Aadhaar number as required will become inactive on July 1, 2023. The PAN, on the other hand, can be made operational again in 30 days after informing the prescribed authority and paying a fee of Rs 1,000, according to the ministry.
Individuals whose PANs become inoperative, according to the Finance Ministry, will not receive any refunds; interest on such refunds will not be payable for the period during which the PAN remains inoperative; and TDS and TCS will be deducted/collected at a higher rate, as provided in the Act. According to the Ministry of Finance, more than 51 crore PANs had already been linked with Aadhaar as of March 28.
Here's how to link your PAN to your Aadhaar:
-
Navigate to the Income Tax e-filing website at https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/.
-
Sign up for it (if not already done). Your user id will be your PAN (Permanent Account Number).
-
Sign in by entering your User ID, password, and date of birth.
-
A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with your Aadhaar. If not, go to 'Profile Settings' on the Menu bar and select 'Link Aadhaar'.
-
As part of the PAN information, details such as name, date of birth, and gender will be included.
-
Compare the PAN details on the screen to those on your Aadhaar card. Please keep in mind that if there is a mismatch, it must be corrected in both documents.
-
If the details match, enter your Aadhaar number and click the "link now" button.
-
You will receive a pop-up message informing you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN.
