PMJVK: Minority Affairs Ministry Grants Rs. 45.34 Cr for Promotion of Unani Medicine System

Ministry of Minority Affairs has approved a grant of Rs. 45.34 Crores under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), a centrally sponsored scheme (CSS). This funding will contribute to the upgradation of Unani Medicine facilities in Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Silchar, and Bengaluru.

The Ministry of Minority Affairs has extended its support to the Central Council of Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) and the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) Bengaluru, both operating under the Ministry of Ayush, to promote and enhance Unani Medicine facilities in India.

The Ministry of Minority Affairs has allocated a total amount of Rs. 35.52 crores to CCRUM and Rs. 9.81 crores to NIUM. The Ministry of Ayush acknowledges the leadership of Union Minister Smt. Smriti Irani from the Ministry of Minority Affairs. Under her guidance, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has granted funds for the development and upgradation of Unani medicine facilities through this initiative.

The approved grant will facilitate the establishment of various Unani Medicine facilities in Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Silchar, and Bengaluru. The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) has been allocated a total amount of Rs. 35.52 crores, while the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru, will receive Rs. 9.81 crores.

A center for fundamental research in Unani Medicine will be set up at the National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders in Hyderabad, at a cost of Rs. 16.05 crores. Additionally, the Ministry has proposed Rs. 8.15 crores for a preclinical laboratory facility at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Chennai, Rs. 8.55 crores for a center of Ilaj bit Tadbeer (regimenal therapy) for musculoskeletal disorders at the Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Lucknow, and Rs. 2.75 crores for a center of Ilaj bit Tadbeer for skin and lifestyle disorders at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Silchar.

NIUM, Bengaluru, will receive Rs. 5.55 crores for establishing a Vishram Girah to accommodate patients' attendants and Rs. 4.26 crores for a skill center for model Unani cosmetic care, a small-scale Unani pharmacy, and Unani crude drug storage.

The proposals were carefully considered by the Empowered Committee of the Ministry of Minority Affairs during its meeting on March 02, 2023. As a result, an amount of Rs. 4.86 crores has already been released to CCRUM as the first instalment (25%) of the total sanctioned cost for its projects in Chennai, Lucknow, and Silchar. The grant for the CCRUM project in Hyderabad and the projects of NIUM, Bengaluru, will be released once their detailed project reports (DPRs) are approved and other necessary technicalities are finalized.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) is an area development program aimed at creating community infrastructure and providing basic amenities in identified areas. With the recent grant approvals, the Ministry of Minority Affairs continues to prioritize the growth and improvement of Unani Medicine facilities, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.
