Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, inaugurated the two-day National Symposium of CLFMA of India in Goa. The event gathered key figures in the sector, including CLFMA Chairman Suresh Deora, Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Mitra, and former Joint Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, O.P. Choudhary.
In his inaugural speech, Rajiv Ranjan Singh highlighted the government's efforts to strengthen the domestic animal husbandry sector. He emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on imports by promoting self-sufficiency in feed and fodder production. Singh also highlighted various government initiatives focused on organizing the unorganized dairy sector, which plays a crucial role in rural employment and income generation. He expressed optimism that discussions like the ones held during this symposium would contribute significantly to policy-making, enabling India to achieve its goal of becoming more self-reliant in livestock and dairy production.
CLFMA Chairman Suresh Deora pointed out the critical role that the livestock sector plays in the Indian economy. With an annual turnover of Rs 12 lakh crore, this sector provides livelihoods for millions, especially in rural areas. He also noted the growing global demand for high-quality livestock products, such as eggs, meat, milk, and cheese, presenting a significant opportunity for Indian farmers to tap into the expanding global market.
Dr. Abhijit Mitra called for better collaboration between the government, industry, and research institutions to boost innovation and development in the livestock sector. During the event, CLFMA of India honoured O.P. Choudhary with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the industry, celebrating his longstanding dedication to advancing animal husbandry in India.
