Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Chemicals & Fertilisers and Health and Family Welfare, conveyed these accomplishments during his inaugural address at the 59th Fertiliser Association of India Annual Seminar 2023, held today under the theme ‘Innovations in Fertiliser and Agriculture Sectors.’
Dr Mandaviya underscored the Union Government's commitment to the welfare of small and marginal farmers, highlighting the absorption of high global commodity prices over the past 2-3 years. This strategic move ensured the stable availability of fertilisers at reasonable Maximum Retail Prices (MRP), resulting in consistent fertiliser consumption and record agricultural output – a remarkable feat compared to global consumption trends.
Emphasizing the government's focus on self-sufficiency, Dr Mandaviya announced the revival of over 3 million tons of Urea capacity, with additional capacity expected in the coming years. He also highlighted efforts to secure raw materials in the Phosphatic and Potassic sectors, encouraging Indian companies to engage in overseas ventures and long-term strategic partnerships.
The Union Minister stressed the importance of promoting integrated crop management, improving soil health through balanced nutrition, and embracing sustainable farming practices. Under the PM PRANAM initiative, a mass movement has been initiated to encourage the balanced and sustainable use of fertilisers, promote organic farming, and implement resource conservation technologies.
Dr Mandaviya commended India's recent technological strides in agriculture, including the introduction of Nano fertilisers such as Nano DAP and Nano Urea. These innovations, he noted, have the potential to revolutionize nutrient application practices globally. He also highlighted the "NAMO Drone Didi" scheme, launched by the Prime Minister, which aims to make drone spraying services accessible to farmers at affordable prices.
Encouraging Indian industries to innovate, Dr Mandaviya called for the development of smart nutrients like slow-release, coated, and liquid fertilisers to improve nutrient use efficiency. The government's collaboration with drone manufacturers, service providers, and agri-companies aims to develop cost-effective solutions and enhance technology penetration.
Dr Mandaviya concluded by urging the fertiliser industry to adopt greener manufacturing practices, aligning with global efforts to alleviate the food crisis. He assured continued government support in strengthening communication and coordination between farmers, the government, and the industry.
The event also witnessed the distribution of awards by the Union Minister to recognise excellence in production, environmental performance, safety, marketing, and the promotion of micronutrients and bio-fertilisers. Additionally, three publications by the Fertiliser Association of India were launched, addressing key regulatory aspects and statistics in the fertiliser sector.
