UP private schools remain shut today: The Unaided Private School Association (UPSA) announced that all private schools in Uttar Pradesh affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), and State Board will remain closed on August 8, 2023.
What Happened?
The UPSA has called for a protest against the arrest of a private school’s principal and teacher in Azamgarh on charges of abetment to suicide after a 17-year-old jumped off the third floor of the school building on July 31, 2023.
It is said that the employees were arrested without proper inquiry. The victim’s family claimed that their daughter suffered frequent harassment from the school’s principal and teacher.
What does UPSA say?
UPSA's official notice read, "All CBSE, ICSE, and UP Borad schools in Uttar Pradesh will remain closed on August 8 as a protest of the arrest of the principal and teacher of Children’s Girls Schools of Azamgarh without conducting an impartial inquiry into the tragic case of a girl student."
"This symbolic protest seeks proper investigation into the case, and if the persons concerned are found guilty, then action must be taken. But if the student has taken a wrong step, that too should be thoroughly probed," Anit Agarwal, President, UPSA, said in a press release. He added that the case should be thoroughly investigated and proven before taking any appropriate charges.
No Government Schools are Closed
Government schools will remain open on August 8, 2023. Students have to attend classes as usual. Students and parents are asked to contact their respective schools to obtain information about the school’s closure.
