The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for significant rainfall activity across several parts of South India due to a well-marked low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to move northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts in the coming hours before advancing northwards along the Andhra Pradesh coastline.
Over the next two days, light to moderate rainfall is predicted at numerous locations in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu, with isolated heavy downpours likely. Coastal Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal might also experience similar conditions from December 20-21. Meanwhile, northeastern states like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya could witness scattered rainfall between December 20-24.

A fresh and active Western Disturbance is expected to impact the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains starting December 27, 2024. This system is likely to bring scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy falls over northwest and central India during the first half of the following week. Overall, rainfall activity is anticipated to be above normal over the northern parts of peninsular India and near normal across the rest of the country during this period.
Residents in these areas are advised to stay vigilant, especially in low-lying regions prone to waterlogging. Fishermen should avoid venturing into the affected marine zones, including the west-central Bay of Bengal, Tamil Nadu coast, and adjacent waters during this period.
