Weather Alert: Cyclonic Storm Dana to Bring Heavy Rainfall to Odisha, West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu

Severe Cyclonic Storm Dana is set to impact Odisha and West Bengal with heavy rainfall and strong winds. Kerala and Tamil Nadu will also experience heavy rains during this period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rainfall and high winds for multiple regions across India due to Cyclonic Storm Dana and associated weather systems. These conditions are expected to last through the 25th of October, with severe impacts forecasted in parts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Kerala.  

Cyclonic Storm Dana in Bay of Bengal

Severe Cyclonic Storm "Dana" is currently located over the northwest Bay of Bengal near Odisha and West Bengal. As of 8:30 AM on October 24th, the storm is positioned approximately 210 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 310 km south of Sagar Island (West Bengal), and is expected to make landfall between Puri (Odisha) and Sagar Island late on the night of October 24th or early morning of October 25th.

  • Wind Speed: Winds are forecasted to reach 100-110 km/h, with gusts up to 120 km/h.

  • Impact Zones: Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha), with possible effects extending to coastal West Bengal.

1. East India

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall (above 21 cm) is forecasted for:

  • Odisha: Baleswar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsingpur, Kendujhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Khorda, and Puri on the 24th and 25th of October.

  • West Bengal: South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, and Bankura on the 24th and 25th of October.

2. South Peninsular India

Light to moderate rainfall is predicted over parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka over the next 2-3 days. Isolated heavy rain is expected on the following dates:

  • Kerala and Mahe: Heavy to very heavy rain on 24th-25th October.

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal: Isolated heavy rain on 24th-25th October.

3. Northeast India

Light to moderate rainfall is likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Isolated thunderstorms and heavy rains are expected on 24th October.

4. Central, West & Northwest India

For Central, West, and Northwest India, no significant rainfall is expected during the week. These regions will experience relatively dry and calm weather conditions compared to other parts of the country currently affected by storms and heavy rainfall.

Wind Warnings

  • Bay of Bengal: Gale winds of 95-105 km/h, gusting to 115 km/h, are currently prevailing and expected to intensify to 105-115 km/h by the evening of 24th October.

  • Odisha and West Bengal coasts: Winds are likely to reach speeds of 100-110 km/h from 24th October afternoon till the morning of 25th October, with gusts of up to 120 km/h.

  • South Jharkhand: Winds of 40-50 km/h are expected from the morning of 25th October, lasting till the evening of 26th October.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors and avoid venturing out during the storm. Fishermen are warned not to venture into the sea, and authorities are taking measures to manage potential flooding and wind damage. Stay tuned to latest weather alerts.
