World Red Cross Day History

As we have said above that World Red Cross Day is celebrated on May 8 every year on the birth anniversary of the first-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner Henri Dunant. Henri Dunant was born on May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Henri Dunant is known for his humanitarian work during the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in 1859. While travelling through Italy, he witnessed the gruesome aftermath of one of the bloodiest battles in European history. He was appalled at the lack of medical care and the suffering of wounded soldiers. He immediately began to organize volunteers to provide medical aid and comfort to the wounded.

This experience led him to write the book "A Memory of Solferino" in 1862, which is considered the precursor to the Geneva Conventions. In this book, he proposed the creation of a neutral organization to care for wounded soldiers on the battlefield.

In 1863, Dunant and four other Geneva residents founded the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later became the ICRC. The ICRC is now the world's leading humanitarian organization, providing assistance and protection to people affected by armed conflict and violence.

In 1948, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was established, which now comprises 190 national societies and is the largest volunteer network in the world.

World Red Cross Day was first celebrated in 1948, and since then, it has been celebrated annually to honour the humanitarian work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to raise awareness of their activities around the world.
