Nahar Singh Kushwah is a farmer from Girwai village of Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh. Instead of having a BA degree in hand, he faced the harsh reality of unemployment. Unable to secure a stable job, Nahar tried to found strength in his roots. Farming had been in his family for generations, In 2012, with no other options left, he fully turned his path towards agriculture. His very first step was to connect with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) to learn modern farming techniques. What followed was a journey of dedication and hard work for a better life ahead.
Mixed Cropping Success
Nahar’s farm, stretching across 3 to 3.5 acres, became a hub of diverse crops. His decision to grow brinjal, coriander, radish, spinach, and roses was strategic—he knew that depending on a single crop was too risky. “If one crop fails, the other will sustain us,” he explains, highlighting his decision to practice mixed cropping. He even experimented with cucumbers, a summer crop, during an off-season, showcasing his innovative mindset.
This approach wasn’t just about survival; it was about thriving. Nahar’s land became a mosaic of colors, with roses blooming alongside vegetables, creating a system where different crops supported one another. His belief in diversification allowed him to face unpredictable weather and market demands without fear. Besides that, he is also growing mushroom as a source of extra income.
Balancing Organic and Inorganic Methods
While many farmers are moving towards organic farming, Nahar admits he still relies more on inorganic methods. “Organic farming is good, but I’ve found that inorganic methods give me better yields,” he says. However, he hasn’t given up on organic completely—he continues to experiment, hoping to one day strike a balance that brings him both quality and quantity.
Bringing Fresh Produce to the Market
Nahar’s hard work pays off in the local markets of Gwalior, where he sells his fresh vegetables and flowers. His income of Rs. 5 to 7 lakhs annually is a result of his dedication, careful crop planning, and market awareness. It’s not just about farming for him; it’s about building a sustainable business that ensures his family’s future.
Voice for Traditional Seeds and Floriculture
A strong advocate for traditional seeds, Nahar feels they’re often overlooked in favor of hybrids. "We must not forget the value of traditional seeds," he insists, believing that these seeds hold the key to maintaining a healthy balance in farming.
He also encourages other farmers to diversify and explore floriculture. “Don’t just stick to one crop. Try flowers, try vegetables—experiment. The land can offer so much more if we let it,” he shares, his eyes lighting up with the possibilities.
Recognition and Empowering Fellow Farmers
In 2018-19, Nahar’s efforts were recognized when he received an award from the ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) at the district level, along with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000. But for him, the recognition is just the beginning.
What makes Nahar truly remarkable is his commitment to his community. He regularly trains fellow farmers, sharing his knowledge and helping them adopt better techniques. His goal isn’t just to succeed for himself, but to uplift everyone around him.
