Dimbaeswar Swargiary’s journey from a traditional farmer to a modern horticulturist is a testament to innovation, resilience, and the power of self-learning. Hailing from Maidang Chapori in Jonai, Assam, Dimbaeswar’s passion for farming was evident from a young age. When asked by his teacher about his future aspirations, his response was clear and unwavering: he wanted to be a farmer. This ambition was not just a childhood dream but a calling that he pursued with unwavering determination.

Leap into Dragon Fruit Farming

Growing up, Dimbaeswar worked alongside his father, who was also a farmer, engaging in traditional farming methods. However, as he matured, Dimbaeswar began to see the potential in diversifying and modernizing their agricultural practices. He decided to venture into horticulture, a move that marked the beginning of a transformative journey.

One of his most ambitious projects was cultivating dragon fruit on 10 bighas of land. The idea to farm dragon fruit came from watching YouTube videos, a modern twist to acquiring agricultural knowledge. This decision was fraught with challenges. Dragon fruit farming requires substantial capital and carries significant risk, especially in the context of Assam’s soil, which was untested for such crops. Undeterred by these challenges, Dimbaeswar invested 3 lakh rupees into his dragon fruit venture.

The initial years were tough, but his perseverance paid off. Today, just four years later, Dimbaeswar has successfully recovered his investment. This achievement is even more remarkable considering that dragon fruit plants take five years to mature and can produce fruit for up to 35 years. Dimbaeswar’s early success not only validates his innovative approach but also sets a promising future for his farming endeavors.

Embracing Diversity and Sustainability

But Dimbaeswar did not stop there. Embracing a holistic and sustainable approach, he has utilized the empty spaces between the rows and poles of his dragon fruit farm to cultivate a variety of other crops. He grows tomatoes, chilies, strawberries, and mint, alongside pomegranates and other valuable plants using mixed farming methods. This diversification not only maximizes land use but also reduces the risks associated with relying on a single crop.

In addition to his horticultural pursuits, Dimbaeswar has recently started cultivating peanuts on 3 bighas of land with seeds provided by the Dhemaji district agricultural office. This new venture has garnered the attention and admiration of officials from the Dhemaji district agricultural science center, who were impressed by the innovative and efficient practices employed on his farm.

Power of Learning and Adaptation

Dimbaeswar’s success is not just a result of hard work and determination but also his willingness to learn and adapt. When asked about his learning process, Dimbaeswar humbly credits YouTube as his initial source of knowledge. However, as he gained experience, he began to rely more on his own insights and observations. Recognizing the value of expert guidance, he established a connection with the district agricultural science center. Their advice and feedback have been instrumental in refining his techniques and correcting any mistakes.
