  • Govt Limits Use of Herbicide Glyphosate Due to Health Concerns

Fearing harm to human and animal health, the Centre has officially restricted the use of the widely used herbicide glyphosate. Glyphosate will now only be applied by pest control operators (PCOs). PCOs are authorised to use lethal chemicals to treat pests such as rodents. More than two years after a draught of the restriction was circulated for comments and views, a formal gazette notification was issued last night. Though the official order did not state it explicitly, many experts believe it is intended to limit farmers' use of glyphosate.

  • Plantation Sector to Request Exemption from New Glyphosate Use Regulations

The plantation industry believes it should be exempt from the new glyhposate regulations. According to a notification issued by the Agriculture Ministry earlier this week, the use of glyphosate is hereby restricted, and no one shall use glyphosate except pest control operators (PCOs). Planters claim that hiring a professional to spray the herbicide would be prohibitively expensive in the vast and remote plantation areas.
