Aquabe 2019 - India’s first international conference on blue economy & aquatic resources will start on 28 November at Hotel Le Meridien, Kochi.
The 3-day seminar, which is hosted by Kerala University of Fisheries & Ocean Studies or KUFOS will talk about development & growth of economy through sustainable exploitation of sea & inland water resources.
The conference will be inaugurated by J. Mercykutty Amma, State Fisheries Minister on Thursday. Nomvuyo Nokwe, Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) - an international organisation of 22 nations sharing coastline of Indian Ocean, will also deliver the key note address.
Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor of KUFOS said that the concept of blue economy is proposed to start appropriate programmes for the sustainable harnessing of ocean resources for the development of a nation along with world economic system. The aim of the conference is to draw a suitable roadmap for India to encourage smart, sustainable & inclusive growth and also generate employment opportunities utilising marine & inland aqua resources in a green & healthy way.
He said covering 75% of the global surface and 80% of global trade, marine ecosystems comprise a key resource for economic development. Because of strategic location among Indian Ocean region, the state of Kerala that has 588 km coastline, has a big potential to grow on the blue economy in a sustainable and inclusive manner with people-centered approach.
The important themes selected on the IORA guidelines are - Aquatic Resources Management (living & non living), climate change impacts on blue economy, Aquatic production systems and ocean health & global warming.
Taking into consideration the importance of the seminar, the External Affairs Ministry is conducting a special session for the benefit of fisheries sector of Somalia & Yemen.
Besides this, an all India colloquium of aqua farmers, scientists, policy makers & fisheries industrialists will also be held later this week that will focus on ground level issues & requirements to develop a communication mechanism among farmers, policymakers and Industrialists.
