Fruits and Vegetables price Increased

Microlevel solutions are needed to ensure farmers get the right prices. But that requires much local initiative, active participation of farmer and long-term policy support from the government. But are there many who are interested or has time for. Everyone wants to talk big and immediate solutions when there is none. The Support prices to vegetables had always been the talk of the town.

State Agriculture Ministers have been saying they would consider the demand of support price for fruits and vegetables. In 2018, Haryana launched MSP-type formula for vegetables where the formula of assured income is based on per acre average production of the vegetables.

The Kerala government yesterday fixed the Support price by adding 20 per cent to the cost of production.

Support price from November

From tapioca to bananas, pineapples and garlic, the floor price of 16 items have been announced. Farmers say the floor prices for pineapple and tapioca are lower. The production cost of pineapple is Rs 15.79 while the support price is Rs 15.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the prices were adjusted in view of the difficulty of storage and processing. But this will not benefit the farmers. The support price for tapioca is Rs 12 and is inadequate. It is also possible to change the price as it is not finally approved. The support price will be announced each year. In markets selected by the Department of Agriculture, the difference in price will be credited to the farmers if the procurement price of the crop falls below the floor price.
