Best Indian Films That Portray a Farmer’s Life

Nearly half of the population in India is directly or indirectly engaged in agricultural activities.

Earlier, we used to see a lot of movies in theatres like Do Bheega Zameen, that used to depict the real lives of farmers, the challenges faced by them, and how hard they work to provide us with the requirements to live- food.

But now, times have changed and so does the interests of people. We hardly see any movies on such topics now. No need to feel sad, there are still some movies on farmers and their lives that are perfectly curated to cater to entertainment purposes and in a fun way, go into the deeper meaning of the hardships farmers here still face.

Here's a list of movies that you can binge-watch this Sunday and have a sneak peek into a farmer’s life, in the Agri sector of our country.

Peepli Live (Must Watch):

The 2010 Indian satirical black comedy film that examines the issue of farmer suicides and the ensuing governmental and media response. Anusha Rizvi, who is making her directorial debut, wrote and directed the film, which was made by Aamir Khan Productions. Omkar Das Manikpuri, a member of the Naya Theatre group, co-stars in the movie with Naseeruddin Shah, Raghubir Yadav, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa, Malaika Shenoy, and a number of up-and-coming actors. UTV Motion Pictures' Peepli Live, which was released on August 13th, 2010.

India's official submission for the 83rd Academy Awards' Best Foreign Film category was Peepli Live, although it was not nominated.

Ringan:

A father-son duo Marathi drama on how they managed to keep going through their sufferings., in a situation where one might have thought to end their lives. A debt ridden farmer and his 7-year-old son decide to visit Pandharpur.

The film was screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner, London Indian Film Festival. It was adjudged as the Best Feature Film in Marathi for the year 2015 at the 63rd National Film Awards.

Director Makarand Mane was awarded "The Director’s Vision Award" at the 14th Stuttgart Indian Film Festival (2015). The film was an entry in the 19th International Children's Film Festival of India.30

Maharshi:

According to sources, the 2019 South Indian film Maharshi's plot was strongly influenced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's life and his journey from India to the United States. A wealthy businessman visits India to reconcile with an old classmate. But when he finds out about his friend's situation, he tries to assist him and, in the process, saves the villages.

Kisaan:

Dayal Singh, the old patriarch, is dejected by the farmers' plight and asks his sons to join their cause. But a violent family quarrel changes everything.

Directed by Puneet Sira and Vekeana Dhillon, S.R. Bharti, Sohail Khan, Panchhi Jalonvi, Salim Bijnori, Anmol Malik, Dilip Shukla, Kanwar Juneja as star cast, this movie performed well on the big screen.

Rangaa Patangaa:

Story of a farmer who loses his oxen (Jumman) but decides to still try to get them back. However, a reporter who covers his tale makes his life complicated and he becomes quite well-known as a result.

The Marathi language Indian movie Rangaa Patangaa was released in 2016.

In addition to Nandita Dhuri, Gauri Konge, and Bharat Ganeshpure reprising their roles as supporting actors, the film stars Makarand Anaspure and Sandeep Pathak in the key roles.

Many international film festivals gave the movie honors, including Best Film and Best Director at the 2016 Pune International Films Festival.
