Sandalwood (known as “Chandan” in Hindi) is a popular aromatherapy ingredient. Essential oil of Sandalwood is extracted from roots and wood of Santalum album, which is the scientific name of Sandalwood tree of East India. The older the wood, the better the oil and scent. It improves for 50-60 years.

4 Best ways to use Sandalwood oil at home 

  • Add a few drops to your body lotion

  • Add a few drops in water and heat it to produce a lovely aroma around the house. You can also use it in a diffuser. 

  • Add the oil to your bathwater.

  • You can apply it on the skin after diluting it in carrier oils like coconut oil or almond oil. Please do a patch test first to rule out the possibility of any allergy, although sandalwood allergies are rare.

Steps to make Sandalwood essential oil  

  1. Buy sandalwood chips or powder. It is easily available in stores. 

  2. Crush the chips using a mortar pestle. 

  3. Take one cup of virgin olive oil in a glass container. Mix the crushed sandalwood or powder in it. 

  4. Let it stay for 7 days. Shake the container occasionally. 

  5. Strain the mixture. 

  6. Press the powder properly. Oil will come out. This is sandalwood essential oil. 

  7. Store this oil in a glass jar. Place in a cool, dark place. 

This homemade oil is as effective as the one you buy from the store. In fact, the homemade oil can be purer, as certain brands may use synthetic fragrances in their oils. However, please do a patch test before using sandalwood. Explore the health benefits of sandalwood
