The area under Soybean cultivation in Madhya Pradesh has declined to 5 million hectares in 2017 Kharif season due to lower productivity. During the period of 2013 and 2015, the productivity fell below 900 kg per hectare which was 1300 kg a hectare during 2012 and 2016.

At the same time, the area under Urad in the state has increased to 1.8 million hectares from the average of 0.85 million hectares. This has led to the shifting of soybean farmers in Madhya Pradesh to Urad cultivation for a better potential. During the period of 2016 crop season productivity of Urad in Madhya Pradesh was 906 kg per hectare, while the national average was seen at 645 kg per hectare.
