Data-Driven Digitalization of Agribusiness in Africa

The global digital transformation process is impacting all sectors, even the most traditional ones. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, more than 400 digital solutions have been deployed to contribute to the modernisation of agribusiness1. These technology solutions are reinventing how financial services, market linkages, supply-chain management, advisory and information services, and business intelligence are delivered to actors along agribusiness value chains.

Indeed, the digital sector delivers significant potential for growth in the agribusiness sector, and data is playing an increasingly important role, in particular as the deployment of IoT (Internet of Things) solutions powered by artificial intelligence is accelerating.

Nevertheless, the majority of agritech start-ups still face challenges to scale their businesses as they struggle to convert a growing user base into sustainable revenue, despite growing interest by investors. Access to data also remains a challenge. Satellite imagery for instance can be prohibitively costly. Policymakers are only starting to put in place favourable framework conditions and address these challenges.

The panel will discuss the challenges faced by agritech start-ups in Africa, the important questions related to investment and some recommendations to maximize the benefits of technology in the agribusiness sector.

Main Discussion Topics:

  • What are the most promising data-driven technologies for the agribusiness sector?

  • What challenges do African innovators face while deploying data-centric digital solutions in agribusiness?

  • What role can governments play in helping private-sector players and development partners to invest in digital projects by supporting policy and data infrastructure?
