The dream of women's socioeconomic empowerment will be incomplete without the empowerment of people living on India's outskirts. These are India's Agriwomen, whose voices are sometimes drowned out by patriarchal customs and gender socialization, and who fight to create their identity at a grassroots level.

In India, the agriculture sector employs 80% of all economically active women; they make up 33% of the agriculture labour force and 48% of self-employed farmers. Women in India's agriculture sector perform the majority of the major farming tasks, from seeding to harvesting, although they have less access to resources than their male counterparts. Agriculture accounts for 17.5 percent of the GDP in emerging countries such as India.

Women have begun to dominate agriculture and its value chain at all levels. At the regional level, women's engagement in rural labour markets varies greatly, although women are overrepresented in unpaid, seasonal, and part-time jobs. We conclude that good gender-aware agricultural policymaking requires reliable, timely, and geographically specific information and analysis.

Women- The unsung warriors of Indian Agriculture

  • Lack of land ownership and control – 85 percent of rural women work in agriculture, only about 13 percent own land

  • Land, livestock, education, financial services, and technology are all areas where women are documenting the gender gap in agriculture.

  • Women inclusive policies

  • Women-centric loans for small scale businesses

  • Women-led entrepreneurial opportunities are urgently needed in rural India

  • Earnings disparities between men and women- Another major issue is gender wage disparity, with women earning only 70% of what men earn for doing the same job.

In the above context, Krishi Jagran is organizing a live session series on International Women's Day 2022 under the theme "Agriwoman Economic & Social Change -the Future of Womenomics" on 08th March 2022.
