It focuses not only on improving human nutritional status, but also on achieving the agribusiness-level goal of increasing farmer and rural community productivity, income, and profits.
Inclusion of nutrient-enriched crops is considered a nutrition-smart agriculture approach, taking into account the role of bio-fortified seeds, whose nutritional quality has been improved through agronomic practises, conventional plant breeding, or modern biotechnology. Bio-fortified crops were only adopted when they became as productive and resistant to pests and diseases as regular varieties, and when they satisfied consumer tastes and other preferences.
