As a responsible owner, your first duty when administering medication to a sick pet is to confirm that you understand the instructions provided carefully. Giving two medications at once is not the same as giving one pill twice daily. Additionally, we would like to caution you against giving specific drugs together or instruct you to administer their tablets on an empty stomach, or conversely, immediately after a meal.
Calling your local veterinary clinic to discuss with a veterinarian or a veterinary technician if you are unaware of what to do is something we highly recommend doing.
1. You can try being sneaky by hiding the pill in their food
One of the easiest ways to give your dog a pill is to hide it in its food. You can either mix it into their regular food or use a special treat, like a piece of cheese or a slice of deli meat, to wrap the pill in. This can make it easier for your dog to swallow the pill and they may be less likely to spit it out.
2. Or if that doesn’t work, you can opt for pill pockets!
Pill pockets are treats specifically designed to hold pills inside. They come in various flavors and can make giving your dog its medication a lot more enjoyable for both of you. Simply place the pill inside the pocket and give it to your dog as you would a normal treat.
3. Maybe crushing the pill and mixing it in their food could work
If your dog refuses to take pills, you can try crushing the pill and mixing it into their food. Just be sure to check with your veterinarian first, as some medications should not be crushed.
4. You can try using a pill dispensing tool for a mess-free alternative
A pill dispenser is a device that allows you to place the pill in a small compartment and then release it directly into your dog's mouth.
These can be helpful if your dog is resistant to taking pills, but they may take some practice to use effectively.
5. Or you can ask your veterinarian for a different form of medication
If your dog is particularly difficult to give pills to, ask your veterinarian if the medication is available in a different form, such as a liquid or chewable tablet.
6. Last but not least, reward your dog after giving the pill
To encourage your dog to take pills in the future, be sure to reward them with a treat or praise after giving them the pill. This will help to create a positive association with the experience.
