The joy of realising a dream that has been fostered from infancy is unparalleled. Rahul Das, a 24-year-old from Patacharkuchi in Assam's Bajali district, felt this excitement when he passed the NEET examination on his first attempt. Rahul is presently preparing to start his undergraduate studies at AIIMS in New Delhi.
Rahul, who hails from Patacharkuchi, had a modest beginning. To make a life, he and his mother used to sell tea in a roadside kiosk.
After his father died a decade ago, Rahul was raised by his mother at Patacharkuchi Vidyapith HS School, where he finished his Higher Secondary Course.
He was accepted to the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering Technology (CIPET) to pursue a diploma in plastic engineering after completing his HS course.
Rahul completed with distinction and began working as a 'quality engineer' for a multinational corporation in Guwahati in October 2020. But he was dissatisfied with his employment because he had always aspired to be a doctor. He quit his job and opted to take the NEET exam. In between serving clients at his mother's store, Rahul insisted he'd find time to study.
"I've watched my mother work really hard for us." We couldn't afford a store assistant. Since elementary school, I've made it a point to assist her in some manner. I brewed tea and sold it as well. "I would sit down to study in the shop as and when it was feasible," Rahul told a news agency.
He used to study almost the entire night throughout his NEET preparation. Rahul expressed his thanks to individuals who stepped forward to aid him financially during his time of need.
"Maa's business is on Mantu Kumar Sharma's land, who owns a large hardware store in Patacharkuchi Chowk. But he never charged us rent. In fact, he has already purchased my airline tickets to Delhi," he informed reporters.
Rahul and his mother live on the campus that surrounds the ancestral home of Bajali DC Bharat Bhushan Devchoudhury. Dev Choudhury has assisted them in a variety of ways and has never charged them rent for their home.
On Friday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the state government will cover all of Das' educational costs.
