Trade between interstate mandis has experienced significant growth in the past year, according to recent data. In the financial year 2022-23, the trade volume increased by 36%, reaching 2,36,140 metric tonnes compared to 1,74,268 metric tonnes the previous year.
This surge in trade amounted to a total value of Rs 2.41 crore, marking a remarkable 117% increase from the previous year's Rs 1.11 crore. The increase in trade is attributed to the successful implementation of the electronic-National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), which has facilitated agricultural product exchanges.
In the same period, the trade volume of agricultural products through the e-NAM platform surged by 41%, reaching 18.6 million tonnes compared to 13.2 million tonnes in the previous financial year.
A senior official, who chose to remain anonymous, stated that several innovative products have begun trading through these mandis. This expansion includes the trading of items such as silk cocoons, saffron, and bamboo on the platform, showcasing the versatility and diverse range of products being bought and sold.
Not only has the volume of trade increased, but the value of agricultural products traded through the e-NAM platform has also seen a significant rise. In the financial year 2022-23, the value of trade reached Rs 74,656 crore, reflecting a 32% increase from Rs 56,497 crore in the previous year.
The integration of 1,260 mandis from 22 states and three Union Territories (UTs) with the e-NAM platform has been a crucial factor in promoting trade between mandis across the country. The government has been actively working on integrating more interstate mandis with the e-NAM to further enhance and facilitate trade.
The states involved in this integration process are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. Additionally, the Union Territories of Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Puducherry are also utilizing the e-NAM platform.
