The massive deadlock on the Noida Expressway came to an end Thursday evening as farmers, after receiving assurances from law enforcement and local authorities regarding their grievances, decided to conclude their protest. This development led to the reopening of the Noida-Delhi route, which had been closed for six hours due to the demonstration.
Demand for Compensation and Land Development
Since December 2023, farmers in Noida and neighbouring states have been fervently protesting, demanding higher compensation and the development of land acquired by local authorities. Their discontent stems from what they perceive as inadequate recompense for their land and the lack of promised developmental initiatives.
Call for 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' and Protest March
February 8, 2024, witnessed a significant mobilisation of farmers from approximately 100 villages in Noida and Greater Noida. Their objective was to convene a 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' and undertake a protest march towards Parliament in the national capital. The gathering aimed to draw attention to their longstanding demands, amplifying their voices on a national stage.
Traffic Chaos and Heavy Police Presence
The protest march had immediate ramifications, causing extensive traffic disruptions at the Delhi-Noida border. To manage the situation, authorities implemented a 24-hour closure of all entry points. The scene was further intensified by the deployment of a substantial police force both from Noida and Delhi, equipped with riot gear and barricades, aimed at thwarting any attempts by protesters to breach the border and enter Delhi.
Assurance and Future Plans
After several rounds of negotiations, Gautam Budh Nagar Commissioner of Police, Laxmi Singh, provided assurances to the protesting farmers, leading to a resolution. Additionally, authorities committed to establishing a committee for further discussions with representatives from the farming community within a week. Despite this development, farmers remain resolute in their stance, vowing to continue protesting until their demands are adequately addressed.
Plans are already underway for a forthcoming mega-march in Delhi, scheduled for February 13, underscoring their determination to persist until their grievances are redressed.
