George Fernandes Passes Away, Nation condoles

Former Defence Minister, George Fernandez passed away at the age of 88 on Tuesday. He was the Defence Minister in the Vajpayee government when the Kargil war broke out and India conducted the Pokhran nuclear tests. His last active political stint was as Rajya Sabha MP in July 2010.

Politicians, journalists and the people of the nations offered condolences over the demise of the dynamic leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “George Sahab represented the best of India’s political leadership. Frank and fearless, forthright and farsighted, he made a valuable contribution to our country. He was among the most effective voices for the rights of the poor and marginalized. Saddened by his passing away.”

Expressing grief, President Kovind tweeted, “Distressed to learn of the passing of Shri George Fernandes, who served India in many capacities, including as Defence Minister. He epitomized simple living and high thinking. And was a champion of democracy, during the Emergency and beyond. We will all miss him.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi wrote, “I’m sorry to hear about the passing of former Parliamentarian and Union Minister, George Fernandes Ji. My condolences to his family and friends in this time of grief.”

Vineet Goenka said that he will be always remembered for his ground-level connection, a strong trade union leader, a seasoned parliamentarian, an extraordinary Defence Minister. His contribution to Indian politics is phenomenal.

Mamata Banerjee described the late leader as a much admired trade unionist. “I have known him for decades. My condolences to his family and admirers,” she said.

Rajnath Singh said that we’ve lost a stalwart of India’s socialist movement. He stated that Fernandez had devoted his entire life for the upliftment of poor and marginalized.

He was a great leader and a fierce politician. We at Krishi Jagran pray that his soul rests in peace…
