Amid scorching temperatures sweeping across large parts of the country, Union Health Minister JP Nadda on June 19, 2024, conducted a comprehensive review of the heatwave situation and the preparedness of central government hospitals. The review session, held with senior officials of the Health Ministry, focused on ensuring optimal healthcare responses to heatwave-induced conditions.

Minister Nadda emphasized the importance of readiness, directing officials to ensure that all hospitals are fully equipped to provide top-notch care to individuals affected by the extreme heat. He called for the establishment of special heatwave units within central government hospitals to address the immediate needs of heatstroke victims effectively.

In line with these directives, the Health Ministry has issued an advisory detailing measures to be adopted. This advisory is part of a broader strategy initiated earlier this month, urging states and Union Territories to strengthen their heatwave preparedness. It includes recommendations for setting up dedicated heatstroke rooms, ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) corners, and enhancing surveillance systems. The advisory also highlights the need for critical fire and electrical safety measures in healthcare facilities to mitigate any additional risks posed by the intense heat.

The government is taking proactive steps to reduce the impact of the heatwave on public health. By improving hospital preparedness and setting up specialized units, the Health Ministry aims to provide timely and effective treatment for those affected by the severe temperatures.
