To boost Mithun conservation initiatives, a delegation comprising DDG (Animal Sciences) Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, ADG (Animal Production & Breeding) Dr. G.K. Gaur, and Director ICAR - NRC on Mithun Dr. Girish Patil embarked on a two-day visit to Mithun Conservation units in Nagaland. Their itinerary included stops at Khonoma, Kohima on 03-05-2024, and Thevopisumi, Phek on 04-05-2024. The focal point of their visit was the distribution of Mithun breeding bulls as part of the community-based Open Nucleus Breeding Scheme (ONBS). This scheme aims to enhance the genetic stock of Mithuns, a valuable asset for the communities involved.

During their visit, DDG and ADG engaged with local farmers, acknowledging and commending their diligent efforts in areas such as health management, breeding practices, nutrition, and reproductive enhancements. The farmers reciprocated the appreciation, highlighting the continued support received from the center, particularly in terms of input distribution and healthcare management for Mithuns.

The delegation also took the opportunity to visit NRCM Porba & KVK Phek, actively participating in the 18th Foundation Day celebrations of KVK Phek. As part of the festivities, numerous publications, awards, input materials, and PPVFRA certificates were distributed to the farmers, further motivating and recognizing their contributions to agricultural advancement.

Continuing their outreach, the delegation extended support to Thetsumi farmers by distributing Mithun bulls under the ONBS scheme. Additionally, they toured the Mithun Farm and facilities at NRCM Porba, expressing appreciation for the diligent work carried out by the center in advancing Mithun conservation efforts.

The significance of their mission was underscored by a meeting with K. G. Kenye, Minister of Power & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Nagaland.

DDG, ADG, Director ICAR - NRC on Mithun, and Dr. SK Singh, Head, KVK Phek, discussed further collaboration and strategies to amplify Mithun conservation endeavors, emphasizing the pivotal role of governmental support in ensuring the sustainability of such initiatives.
