India and France are ready to expand their cooperation to strengthen global food security and promote sustainable practices, as highlighted by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, at the Asia Pacific Commission (APAC) 2024 Forum in New Delhi. Goyal highlighted the immense potential for bilateral collaboration in sectors ranging from agriculture to renewable energy and advanced technologies, positioning both nations as key players in combating climate change and driving economic growth.
Addressing attendees, Goyal noted that India and France's shared commitment to sustainable practices can play a pivotal role in mitigating climate impacts. He praised the International Solar Alliance (ISA), co-led by the two countries, as a prime example of their partnership's success. With over 100 member countries, ISA has been instrumental in promoting clean energy, especially in emerging and developing nations, reinforcing the global shift toward sustainability.
Highlighting India's rapidly evolving aerospace sector, Goyal revealed that the country now has the world's largest aviation market, having ordered 1,500 planes, with potential to reach 2,000. This growth, coupled with the government's ambitious plan to expand from 125 airports in 2023 to 200 by 2029, presents opportunities for French aerospace firms to establish manufacturing units in India. He emphasized that India’s aviation boom will be a significant driver of demand over the next three decades.
Goyal highlighted India’s growing defence industry and called for stronger French collaboration, emphasizing policies that allow 100% foreign ownership to attract global investment. He also pointed out the potential for joint innovation in electric vehicles (EVs) to support first-time vehicle owners and noted opportunities in digital technology, including AI and cybersecurity.
The upcoming India-France Year of Innovation 2026 will promote initiatives in IT, healthcare, renewable energy, and smart cities. Trade between the nations reached USD 15 billion in FY24, with France being the 11th largest investor in India and contributing to job creation and skill development.
Reflecting on the 75 years of diplomatic friendship and 25 years of strategic partnership, Goyal emphasized shared values like liberty, equality, and multilateralism. He reiterated that the adoption of the Horizon 2047 roadmap would strengthen their cooperation in space, defense, nuclear energy, and digital sectors. He invited French firms to collaborate in India’s ambitious infrastructure projects spanning 20 industrial hubs, aimed at fostering world-class connectivity and urban development.
