Poultry farms with any more than 5,000 birds will require authorization under the air and water pollution acts beginning January 1, 2023, under the amended categorization for poultry farms. The Goa Pollution Control Board approved this at its most recent meeting.

According to prior Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) regulations, all the farms with one lakh or over one lakh birds needed their license to operate.

In 2017 and 2019, these guidelines were presented to the GPCB.

The Goa board got an order from the National Green Tribunal in 2020. The letter asked it to reconsider these specific guidelines to classify poultry farms as “green” and to exclude them from the air and water acts, as well as from the Environment Protection Act.

The NGT instructed the CPCB to make additional orders in less than three months and if they failed to do so, all state pollution boards would require to enforce the authorization method for the poultry farms which have more than 5,000 birds beginning in January 2021.

The letter also read that the state board can still take strict actions against any farm, violating air, water, and soil standards.

The environmental norms can still be strictly enforced on such poultry farms until the proper licensing occurs.

Furthermore, guidelines were received by the Goa board from the CPCB

. The guidelines state that any farm having more poultry birds than 25000, has to apply for proper licensing of the farm.

The licensing will be obtained under Water and Air acts, categorized under the Green category.

There are several other guidelines including water, air, and soil pollution.

The revised guidelines for the poultry farms require authorization. It is mandatory to obtain consent for the farms having more than 5000. This guideline will come into effect from 1 January 2023.
