The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of India. Regions including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Interior Karnataka are expected to experience significant rainfall over the next week. Isolated regions of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Odisha, Kerala, Mahe, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Coastal Karnataka will also see heavy downpours.
Northeast India (Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal and More)
The IMD predicts widespread rainfall across Northeast India, particularly in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. Isolated regions in Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience heavy rainfall for the next seven days. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will also see isolated heavy showers on October 5, 8, and 9. The weather department advises residents of these areas to remain cautious due to the potential risk of floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain.
Monsoon Withdrawal in Northwest India
The southwest monsoon has begun to withdraw from parts of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and most of the North Arabian Sea as of October 5, 2024. The line of withdrawal passes through regions such as Nautanwa, Sultanpur, and Nandurbar, marking the end of the monsoon season for these areas. The IMD has stated that conditions are favorable for the further withdrawal of the monsoon from the remaining parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra within the next two to three days.
South Peninsular India (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and More)
Southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Rayalaseema will also see widespread rainfall. The IMD has issued a warning for very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe on October 5 and during October 8-11. Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep will experience isolated heavy showers, with rain expected to continue for up to seven days in some regions.
Squally weather with wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is expected in the Lakshadweep area, the Gulf of Mannar, and the northern parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into these regions due to unsafe sea conditions.
While heavy rainfall is predicted across several regions of India, the gradual withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues in the north and west. People in affected areas are advised to remain alert, especially in regions expecting extreme weather conditions.
