Banana Leads the Export Race over Other Fruits

Export growth of banana and other fruits in last three years.

Banana export has risen tremendously in terms of quantity and quality in the past three financial years. Countries import bananas more than other fruits like grapes, mangoes, and apples from the fruit basket. 

Between 2017-2020, the fresh banana export growth has been seen 93.94 percent in terms of quantity and 72.22 percent in terms of value. 

The country exported around 1.95 lakh tones of bananas worth $93 million in 2019-20 compared to 1.02 lakh tonnes worth $54 million in 2017-18. 

Despite the pandemic effect worldwide, the country exported 1.43 lakh tones of bananas worth $63 million in the first nine months of 2020-21.

Pomegranate 

Pomegranate took the second position after banana in the export market; as per the data received in writing in the Lok Sabha, Pomegranate export growth rises to 63.05 percent in quantity and 15.11 percent in terms of value between 2017-20. 

Approx. 85,430 tons of pomegranates worth $99 million were exported in the year 2019-20 compared to 52,392 tons worth $86 million in 2017-18.

Apples 

Apple is the fruit which liked by everyone overseas, that’s the reason apple also crossed the export figures of last three financial years in the first month of 2020-21. 

The country exported 30,390 tons worth $14 million during April – December 2020-21. The export of apples from the country is 21,881 tons worth $11 million in 2019-20, exported 23,156 tons worth $11 million in 2018-19, and 17,781 tons worth $7 million in 2017-18.

Mangoes 

Fresh mangoes export keeps steady for three financial years in terms of quantity and value.

We have compared the fresh mangoes export with mango products, which shows different trends.  Mango Jam and jelly export have increased to 1.45 lakh tons worth $136 million in 2019-20 as compared to 1.21 lakh tons worth $123 million in 2017-18. 

Mango pulp declined to 85,726 tons worth $82 million in 2019-20 from 1.10 lakh tons worth $ 105 million in 2017-18.  Nevertheless, the first nine-month export of mango pulp recorded  77,649 tons worth $76 million in 2020-21. 

Grapes  

Grape’s export declined by 4.22 percent in terms of quantity between 2017-18 and 2019-20.

Together with grapes, raisin export also declined. Approx. 24,670 tons of raisin were exported worth $38 million in 2019-20 compared to 25,260 tons worth $37 million in 2017-18. 

India’s total export of fruits and their product was recorded as 9.01 lakh tons worth $857 million in the first nine months of 2020-21.
