Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBYhas been launched by the Govt of India with the aim to providfinancial support to the farmers in case of any crop loss due to the unforeseen events. The scheme also helps in stabilizing the income of farmersenhancing the growth and competitiveness of the agriculture sector besides protecting farmers from production risks.

All farmers including sharecroppers and tenant farmers growing the notified crops in the notified areas and having insurance interest are eligible to get enrolled under the scheme. Basis the channel for enrolment, Govt of India has categorized farmers into two broad categories -

1. Loanee farmers: A farmer who has taken a loan from any bank or financial institution for agricultural activities are called Loanee farmers. Banks or financial institutions are supposed to enrol all their loanee farmers under the PMFBY, however, if any farmer doesn’t want to get enrolled under the scheme, may opt-out by submitting a written request to the concern bank branch.

The bank would enroll the loanee farmers for the area and crop declared by the farmer during the loan process however if a farmer has sown a different crop, may inform the same to the bank to get insurance cover for the sown crop. In the case of a loanee farmer, the bank debit the premium directly from the farmer’s loan account and submit the same along with the other necessary information to the insurance company through the National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP).

loanee farmer gets a confirmation message through the NCIP portal once his application gets approved in the portal. Also, the concerned insurance company sends detail about his enrolment and other coverage details through an inland letter.

2. Non-loanee farmers: A farmer who has not availed crop loan, but engaged in farming activity, may also get his crop insured under the PMFBY through the nearest Common Service Centers (CSC) or through the authorized representative of the insurance company.

They would require to submit a copy of the land document, Sowing certificate, Aadhar card, and bank details along with the required premium to get enroll for the season. Basis the document provided, the CSC/authorized representative of the insurance company fills up and submit all the details in the NCIP portal and give the acknowledgment of enrolment to the enrolled farmer.

A farmer enrolled under the PMFBY in the districts allocated to Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Company, can check the status of his application at his convenience and in his own language through the “Farmitra” mobile App. The simple steps to follow are as under -

  • Download the Farmitra App from the Google Play Store and register by using the mobile number and location

  • Click on the ‘My Policy’ icon at the bottom left of the App and select the first option “Check your crop Insurance policy”.

  • If the Application number is available, enter the same in the box to see the status of the Application/Policy

  • If the Application number is not available than some basic details like Name of the enrolled farmer, Year, Season, District, Insured Village, Crop, and bank account details would be required for verification and get the policy status.

It has been observed that few farmers close the loan account or change the bank, before the claims settlement hence they may need to update the correct account details to get the claims. There is a facility available in the Farmitra App through which a farmer can update his bank account details by uploading a copy of his bank passbook with correct account details.
