State Bank of India to Provide MUDRA Loans to Broiler Farmers in Kerala

The State Bank of India (SBI), Thiruvananthapuram has entered into an agreement with the Kudumbashree Broiler Farmers Producers Company & Kudumbashree Mission for funding poultry farmers under the Kerala Chicken (Kudumbashree) project.

The Kudumbashree Mission is the State Poverty Eradication Mission that also doubles up as a drive for women empowerment, under the Department of Local Self-Government in Kerala.

What is MUDRA loan?

Sources said that under the agreement, poultry farmers sponsored by the Kudumbashree Mission will be backed with MUDRA loans.

Members of Kudumbashree will involve themselves individually or mutually in the project and will be checked and supported by the Kudumbashree State Mission, its district missions and even at the local self-government level.

It is important to mention that the demand for poultry meat in Kerala is estimated at 1 crore kilogram per week, which is harvested from 50 lakh chicks. 50% of the demand is being met by Tamil Nadu & Karnataka.

Recently, the State government had endorsed the Kerala Chicken project to make available quality broiler chicken at economical rate under the brand name Kerala Chicken (Kudumbashree).

State Bank of India aims to fund 757 broiler chicken farm units of 1,000 birds each & help with stocking of day-old chicks, feed, equipment, medicines, construction of she & payment of required insurance. Note that loan will be given only in individual capacity to members of neighborhood groups sponsored by the Kudumbashree Mission.
