In context to global export scenario of Australian Chickpeas, the shipments of in December has increased significantly over November month. According to data from Australia Bureau of Statistics, Australia has exported 113,252 metric tons (MT) in December, up 82% month on month.

In November Chana had exported 62,184 MT of chickpeas. Total shipment for the current marketing year so far is 175,436 MT, compared to 95,394 in the same period the last marketing year. The data also revealed that Bangladesh purchased 47,997 MT and emerged as the topmost importer. Pakistan was the second most important importer purchasing 39,517 MT, followed by Nepal with 11,330 MT.

Trade conditions were light to moderate in North American chickpea markets during the last days of January month. Attention was towards the seeding progress in Mexico and estimations about the probable size of this season’s Kabuli harvest of India.

Indian chickpeas markets had appreciated in the recently ended week. Reports of government procurement to begin March onwards supported the market, in addition to improvement in the product demand.

Lower arrivals in major mandis also favored the price rise. Over previous week the average prices in mandis of Delhi/Bikaner and Akola are up Rs.100-150/qtl approximately. The upward momentum can cool off to some extent in the forthcoming week as supplies are adequate in the country while sowing progress has been above previous year till now.

The Government has enough stocks to feed the market before new crop arrives. There are estimations of yields to surpass their recent five year average because of ample moisture reserves following last year's monsoon season. Latest data says that the planted area for chickpeas in India has increased from 10.731 million hectares at this time last year to a record 11.2 million.

The average output for this year is estimated near to 11.74 million MT, up from 11.35 million last year. At present most of the stock lies with the government. The potential for a significant increase in Chana production may limit the possibility of any reduction in the import duties on peas, or relaxation of the tariff rate quotas, in near future.

In Canada the exports pace of Green peas had been impressive in January as compared with December 2020. The recent statistics from Statistics Canada revealed that export sales totaled 18,559 metric tons (MT) during the month, up 17% from the 15,916 MT shipped the previous month.

Total shipments for this marketing year have reached 99,607 MT so far, compared to 125,014 during the last marketing year. United Arab Emirates was the leading importer during the month seeking 6,751 MT. China was the second largest buyer with 4,036 MT, followed by Egypt at 1,777 MT.
