10 Good Reasons to Save Garlic and Onion Peels; Know Ways to Use Them

Onion and garlic are the two most widely used vegetables all around the world. But many of us throw away their skins or peels...isn't it? You will be amazed to know that they are actually nutrient dense and have numerous household uses as well.

The outer skins of garlic and onion is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, E, and many antioxidants. Onion skin is also a rich source of flavonoids, mainly quercetin, a potent antioxidant & anti-inflammatory.

If you peel the garlic, it removes the phenylpropanoid antioxidants that protects the heart and helps in fighting the aging process along with boosting immunity & lower cholesterol. So don’t be astonished when you see garlic peels in health products on the market.

It must be noted that to get the most out of onions and garlic peels, use organic whenever possible to avoid ingestion of pesticides sprayed on the outer layers of the vegetables.

Relieve muscle cramps

If you want to get relieve from muscle cramps then just boil some onion peels for 10-15 minutes in water. Drain the onion peels from the water & drink it as a tea before going to bed.

Induce sleep

If you face difficulty in sleeping then drink a cup of onion skin tea as a natural sleep aid. all you will have to do is boil one glass of water with some onion skins. Boil this for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and enjoy.

Add nutrients to compost

Onion and garlic skins are great way to add nutrients to your compost stack. So never throw away garlic or onions peels as it is very good for your plants.

Treat throat soreness

Boil onion peels in the water for ten minutes. Then gargle. This will help reduce the inflammation in throat with its anti-inflammatory properties.

Hair growth

If you have dry and damaged hair the treat it with onion peels. All you will have to do is mix onion skin in water and boil it for 10 minutes. Then wash your hair with a regular shampoo. Rinse hair with this liquid so that your hair becomes soft and smooth.

Garlic and onion peels' anti-fungal properties make them effective at alleviating itchy skin problems, like athlete’s foot. Here you can apply onion-infused water to affected area to get relief.

Do not remove the skins of your garlic when you roast them as it will keep the inner part soft from inside and at the same time adds the healthy nutrients listed above.

Add extra nutrition to soups & stews

Garlic and onion skins should be used to add extra nutrition to stews, soups or while preparing bone broth or stock.  Strain the thin skins out afterward.

Mix into bread

Put one teaspoon of ground onion peel to your homemade bread dough to bring gentle flavor and nutrients.

Nutritious rice

Mix in some onion peels when you cook rice to add some extra vitamins. Then gently remove the onion skins after cooking.
