One in five young adults in India has a high blood pressure problem! The shocking data was revealed at the research report presented at the 70th Annual Conference of the Cardiological Society of India (CSI). Moreover, High Blood Pressure or Hypertension is one of the most growing diseases across India with 207 million people (men 112 million, women 95 million) and life-threatening as well. The drastic change in food habits, modern lifestyle is adding more fuel to this growing disease compared to the ancient days when men were more inclined towards nature. Moreover, we can term it as a modern time disease that worked as a slow killer to your body and destroy your healthy cells unknowingly. One has to be really careful about his/her food habits as some foods unknowingly worked as a poison to this disease. Hence, we have prepared a list of food that you need to avoid as soon as possible although that’s healthy if you are diagnosed with hypertension or high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure Food to Avoid


Although Spinach is known as a healthy leafy vegetable filled with antioxidants, it worked as a poison for high blood pressure patients. Spinach comes with high sodium count which must be avoided by hypertensives. To avoid fluctuations in blood pressure you must avoid this leafy vegetable.


Bread has the highest amount of salt and sodium. Moreover, the main ingredients of bread are Maida which doesn’t work well to your body and raise the blood sugar levels and shut down fat burning. Stay away from bread if you have high blood pressure.

Fenugreek or Methi

This high sodium count leafy vegetable must be avoided by high blood pressure patient.

Tomato Ketchup

Tomato Ketchup has high amount of salt being added as preservatives. You can tag it as the worst food for hypertensives.

Peanut Butter

Although we are in love with this butter, it’s really bad for high blood pressure and thyroid patient.


This healthy fruit comes with good amounts of sodium which must be avoided by hypertensives. Moreover, you have different options of fruit which are really good for you.

Cashew Nuts

This fruit is loaded with calories and fats, so hypertensive’s who have obesity or high cholesterol is advised to stay away from it.


Salt and sodium are villains when it comes to living with high blood pressure and heart disease.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest that people with high blood pressure limit their daily sodium intake to just 1,500 milligrams (mg). According to the Mayo Clinic, the average American eats about 3,400 mg a day, more than twice that amount.


Preserving any food requires salt. It stops the food from decaying and keeps it edible longer. However, salt can take even the most innocent cucumber and make it a sodium sponge.

The longer vegetables sit in canning and preserving liquids, the more sodium they can pick up. A whole dill pickle spear can contain as much as 390 mg of sodium. However, reduced-sodium options are available.

Chicken skin and packaged foods

People with high blood pressure should reduce saturated fats and avoid Trans fats. Items high in saturated fat include:

  • chicken skin

  • full-fat dairy

  • red meat

  • butter
