Over the past few years, men's skincare has been stigmatized as being too feminine and unimportant. However, the present generation has debunked this myth, and men are now beginning to pay attention to skincare.

For glowing and clear skin, knowledge of the skin condition is the most essential requirement. The formulation of the ideal daily skincare routine for men makes it simpler by knowledge of the skin type, its texture, and its problems.

Certain elements, such as eating habits, daily routine, and sleeping patterns should be taken into account while analyzing the condition of the skin. These can have a major effect on skin conditions. It is advised to get 8 hours of sleep every night and to intake enough proteins, vitamins, minerals, etc. for clear skin.

Having an effective skincare routine is beneficial in addition to taking care of your skin from the inside out. Exfoliation, cleansing, moisturization, and the application of a good sunscreen are some of the basic steps that should be adopted to protect the skin from severe damage.

  • Cleansing- Cleaning the skin is believed to be an important step in attaining clear, healthy skin. Men are known to have sebaceous glands that are more active and generate twice as much sebum as women. Pollutants and dirt can instantly stick to the face as a result of excessive sebum production. Therefore, it's important to cleanse the skin twice a day to remove any dirt that might later cause acne, irritation, or dryness.

  • Exfoliating- Exfoliation not only aids in unclogging pores but also in preventing ingrown hairs while shaving. Exfoliation can also aid in removing dead skin cells and makes the skin feel fresh and healthy. Exfoliation once a week is good enough for beginners. However, it can be done twice a week or more, depending on how the skin responds to exfoliation. It is generally recommended to use exfoliators derived from plants such as alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids because they are safer for the skin.

  • Moisturizing- Moisturization is essential to maintain the moisture of the skin. The skin's natural oils can be removed by harsh cleansers and exfoliators, leaving the face dry and flaky. Using a moisturizer will hydrate your skin and makes it feel soft throughout the day.

  • Apply Sunscreen- Sunscreen use shouldn't be limited to the summer only. Sunscreen application is required all year round to defend against UVA and UVB radiation. An effective sunscreen should have an SPF of 30 or more and be water-resistant. Wearing a hat outside and applying sunscreen can provide additional protection, especially during the summer.

  • Having a Proper Skincare Routine- Having a personal skincare routine is essential because everyone's skin type is different. Men must select cleansers, sunscreens, moisturizers, masks, and exfoliators according to their skin types. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine will not only improve the health but also the appearance of the skin.

  • Stay Hydrated- Water plays a significant role in achieving clear and glowing skin as it helps flush out toxins from the skin and the body. The intake of an adequate quantity of water hydrates the skin and retains the skin’s moisture. On the other hand, Dehydration can cause wrinkles and other skin disorders.

  • Minimize Smoking and Alcohol Consumption- Smoking may accelerate the skin to age prematurely. Smoking may worsen pre-existing skin diseases like psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa. In contrast, alcohol has an impact on hormones that dry out the skin, cause acne, and accelerates skin aging. As a result, quitting both drinking and smoking will improve the appearance of the skin and prevent premature ageing.

  • Exercise Regularly- Exercising regularly can improve skin’s health, protect it from aging and other damage. Regular workouts also help in the promotion of collagen production, regulate blood flow to the skin, and supply essential nutrients to the skin as well.

  • Maintain Proper Diet- Often, the skin sheds its old cells and grows new ones in its place. A healthy diet is considered essential for this process. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants and rich in beta carotene, zinc, vitamin C, and E can aid in achieving blemish-free, soft, and glowing skin.

  • Adopt a Good Sleeping Pattern- Having a regular sleep schedule is essential for maintaining clear and healthy skin. Sleep is a time when the body develops new skin cells, stimulates blood flow, and repairs and rejuvenates the skin. Therefore, a lack of sleep might disrupt the skin's normal healing process. Lack of sleep can also worsen acne and raise cortisol levels which will then cause the sebaceous glands to generate more oil.

  • Avoid Excess Sugar Intake- Consuming too much sugar can raise insulin levels, which can worsen skin irritation. The consumption of too much sugar can make other existing illnesses like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea worse. Along with sugar, dairy products can also increase skin inflammation.

  • Avoid Touching the Skin- Constantly touching the face can cause oil, bacteria, and dirt from the hands to the face. This may cause acne breakouts and pore blockage. Pimple popping is another thing that needs to be avoided. Popping pimples exposes the pore to the bacteria on the hand, which may cause a permanent scar on the face.

  • Reduce Stress- Intense stress levels can impact the skin leading to irritation and breakouts. Managing stress levels can reduce levels of cortisol and adrenaline as well as address hormone fluctuations that minimize oil production. Hence, reducing stress can lead to clean, fresh, and glowing skin.

  • Shave Regularly- Shaving on a regular basis may help the skin appear better and look clearer when combined with proper skincare practices. Pre-shaving gels, mousse, and creams can keep the skin supple and hydrated. Before shaving, it is advised to wash the face and splash it with warm water to open the pores.
