Do you love bananas? Be a little concerned if you are feeling under the weather. Let us understand if eating your favorite fruit during a fever or cold is a problem.

What Ayurvedic Says

According to Ayurveda, bananas are classified as 'cold' in nature. This categorization, based on the concept of "Virya," suggests that excessive consumption of cold foods, like bananas, may increase the chances of contracting conditions such as flu, cough, and fever.

A Scientific Approach

Contrary to traditional beliefs, scientific research offers a nuanced understanding of bananas' impact on respiratory ailments. There exists a protein in bananas called banana lectin (or BanLec), which exhibits antiviral properties. Additionally, bananas are a staple in the BRAT diet (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast), recommended for individuals with coughs, colds, and stomach ailments due to their soluble fiber content.

Bananas: Friend or Foe

While bananas contain histamine, which can trigger mucous secretion, the reality is more complex. Bananas' role in catering to mucous formation is not definitive. Their inclusion in the BRAT diet and their antiviral properties suggest that they may aid in alleviating symptoms associated with respiratory illnesses.

Banana and Nighttime

The traditional belief that bananas should be avoided, especially at night and during winter, stems from concerns about their heaviness and slow digestion. However, there is no inherent harm in consuming bananas during these times. Moderation is key, as excessive consumption may lead to discomfort, particularly for those with digestive issues.

Bananas, with their nutritional richness, continue to be a source of debate regarding their effects on coughs and colds. Ultimately, individual tolerance, moderation, and consulting with a healthcare professional are paramount.
