It has created a biodegradable polymer from food waste that improves crop water and fertilizer retention. After completing successful point-of-care testing in South Africa, New Zealand, and the United States, the company intends to scale supply in India and Japan and expand its global reach.
Other applications for the polymer include sustainable ice packs and organic sanitary pads, both of which the company intends to pursue in the coming years. EF Polymer reduces water and fertilizer consumption while increasing yields without the use of harmful chemicals.
A UV polymerization process employs biowaste such as fruit and vegetable peels, as well as other binding agents, to create the polymer. Fasal Amrit, the resulting product, can store water for up to three years. When applied to soil, the polymer retains and releases water based on soil saturation, thereby preventing leaching. The process of expansion and contraction also improves soil aeration.
