The Met Department predicts that the heavy rain that has been battering the southern state since Saturday will continue until Tuesday. Earlier in the day, a red alert was issued in three districts: Idukki, Thrissur, and Ernakulam.

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, a 40-centimetre-wide shutter of the Idukki Dam was opened to relieve the strain of the overflowing waterbody. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Mullaperiyar Dam would likely to be opened as its water level rises due to heavy rains in Kerala

According to the most recent IMD bulletin, a low-pressure system exists over the central Arabian Sea and is predicted to advance west-northwestwards, becoming well-marked across the north Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal by November 15. The low-pressure system will continue to advance in the same direction, becoming a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal by November 17 and moving close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast by November 18

A cyclonic circulation also exists across southern Karnataka and neighboring north interior Tamil Nadu, and another over the Arabian Sea in the southeast. According to the IMD report, the circulation over the Arabian Sea is predicted to persist for the next two days.

Apart from this, a fresh low-pressure region is expected to emerge over the east-central Arabian Sea, near the coast of south Maharashtra and Goa, around November 17

Heavy rain and squally weather are expected throughout the seven states and UTs as a result of these conditions.

Here are the important IMD alerts until November 18:

  • According to the most recent IMD forecast, isolated extremely heavy rainfall across Kerala is quite possible on November 15. On November 16, an isolated heavy rainfall alert was issued for the state.

  • On November 15, light to moderate rainfall with isolated extremely heavy downpours is very likely over south coastal Karnataka and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On November 17and 18, the IMD issued a similar weather alert across coastal Andhra Pradesh. On November 16, coastal Karnataka will get scattered heavy rains.
