On Friday, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) officials seized roughly 27.5 kilos of prohibited tobacco products from 4 different shops, mostly around Palladam in the Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu.

Surprise Inspection of 38 Stores

Vijayalalithambigai, FSSAI's Designated Officer (Tiruppur), worked with a team of six Food Safety Inspectors as well as carried out unannounced inspections on Friday at 38 grocery stores as well as kiosks in the town of Palladam and other districts such as Devarampalayam, Chinnakarai, and Samalapuram in the taluk.

During the site visit, the team safety officers discovered pan masala, gutkha, and several other banned tobacco items in four of these inspected stores.    According to Ms. Vijayalalithambigai, the illegal substances were seized, and each of the 4 stores has been charged with a fine of Rs.5,000.

She also stated that they served notices in compliance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.

She also stated that most of these illegal tobacco-based products are mostly brought into the district from Karnataka. The amount of prohibited tobacco products that are being sold in the district of Tiruppur has been reduced dramatically as a result of such surprise visits and inspections and police crackdowns, she added.

The Food safety and standards team also captured prohibited single-use plastic products from two stores and destructed packaged food products weighing approximately 4.5 kg that was either expired or did not have an expiration date inscribed on the packages.
