The Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI), Goa, participated in the 51st State Level Student Scientist Science Exhibition held from February 14-16, 2024. This three-day event was hosted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi, in collaboration with SARAL, Government of Maharashtra, SCERT Pune, and YBI School Maharashtra and took place in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra. The inauguration of the exhibition was graced by the esteemed presence of Honourable Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Scientific Discourse on Millets
One of the highlights of the exhibition was a scientific talk titled 'Millets: A Unique Nutritious Food', delivered by Dr Gopal Mahajan, Senior Scientist, and Vinod Ananda Ubarhande, ACTO (FS), representing ICAR-CCARI, Goa. This talk aimed to raise awareness among participants regarding the nutritional value of millet and their health benefits. Moreover, it sheds light on the crucial role millets and certain crops play in securing food sustainability amidst uncertain climatic conditions.
ICAR-CCARI's Initiatives
ICAR-CCARI has been engaged in initiatives to promote millet production and consumption. Dr Parveen Kumar, Director of ICAR-CCARI, provided guidance and support to the team to raise awareness about millets during the exhibition. Their efforts include a series of lectures, talks, capacity-building programs, and field demonstrations aimed at educating farmers and consumers alike about the significance of millet in ensuring food security and addressing climate change challenges.
Exhibition Participation
The exhibition witnessed participation from 19 schools representing each of Maharashtra's approximately 35 districts, with over 1200 students and teachers attending in person. Additionally, the live streaming of the scientific talk reached an audience of around 15,000 viewers. The exhibition garnered footfall, with over 4000 visitors per day showing interest in the showcased content.
Promoting Health and Sustainability
Through various exhibits and presentations, the exhibition underscored the importance of millet consumption for health and its resilience to climate change. ICAR-CCARI's multifaceted approach towards promoting millet production and consumption emerged as a key theme, emphasising the institute's commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
