The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heatwave conditions in parts of Jharkhand, cautioning residents to take precautions. Schools are to remain closed.

Jamshedpur, the industrial hub of Jharkhand, has been one of the worst affected cities, with temperatures reaching a scorching 44°C on Wednesday, almost 7 degrees Celsius above normal. Daltonganj, in Palamu district, recorded the highest temperature in the state at a staggering 45.6°C.

The IMD has issued a red alert for severe heatwave conditions in Garhwa, Palamu, Saraikela-Kharsawan, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum districts, valid till June 14th. An orange alert has been issued for the Chatra and Latehar districts, indicating a severe heatwave is likely. Other parts of the state, including Godda, Dumka, and Ranchi, are under a yellow alert, signifying heatwave conditions are possible.

The Jharkhand government has taken steps to protect students from the extreme heat by closing all schools in the state from June 12th to June 15th. This decision aims to minimize health risks associated with heat exposure for children.

With the heatwave expected to continue for a few more days, residents are advised to stay indoors during the peak heat hours (usually between 11 am and 4 pm). Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and consuming cooling beverages is crucial.
