The landowners in the state who engage in paddy farming would be given a royalty of Rs. 1000 said Agriculture Minister V S Sunil Kumar while inaugurating the sowing festival at Metran Kayal, Kottayam.

The government wanted to ensure a system wherein the farmer would get remuneration for the paddy procured within three days of producing the paddy receipt sheet (PRS) with the banks. This had been agreed upon by the bankers’ consortium. However, some of the banks had disagreed to sign the agreement.

The minister said that the department had decided not to continue business with banks that follow anti-farmer policies. This year the government plans to bring three times more area of fallow paddy fields under cultivation than last year and forty-seven millers have expressed their readiness to procure paddy so far this year, he added.
