On Friday, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik wrote to Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandaviya about the state's short supply of fertilisers compared to its monthly requirement during the current Kharif season.

Patnaik wrote in his letter, "It is envisaged to make good the loss with a good harvest expecting a near normal monsoon in line with the forecast of IMD," requesting Mandaviya's personal intervention in the matter of insufficient supply of fertilisers against its monthly requirement, including the backlog of previous months. As a result, the supply of this most critical input, fertiliser, should be as needed.

Furthermore, August-September is the peak demand period for various fertilisers, and a shortage at this time would have a negative impact on agricultural production in the state."

"There is a severe shortfall in the supply of DAP to the State as compared to the requirement," his letter stated.

According to the letter, the overall availability of DAP during the Kharif season as of July 31 was 69% of the pro rata requirement, with a 46,877 MT shortfall.

It also stated that the good monsoon after a dry spell has triggered agricultural operations to full swing, resulting in a massive demand for fertilisers.

"The State has lost crop production in the previous year due to natural calamities such as YAAS, JAWAD, and GULAB," the letter stated.
